The Globalism – Tribalism Collusion

by Tetoro on May 16, 2012

As stated in my last article, the world is going global, with some discrepancy according to the countries. Then among the world population, this global trend is known as globalism : a theory explaining how mankind would in the future share the same culture through a merge of all of the existing cultures. Yet, as Dan Fonseca wrote in an article of his blog, globalism induces an “opposite, yet equal force” feeding upon the first one : Tribalism.

Facebook : A global service using tribalism to categorize people

In order to explain what is the tribalism, the best way is to describe the three effects of globalism, leading to tribalism.

  1. The first one is the resistance people create against globalism. Patriotism and nationalism, as well as regionalism or communitarianism, are used as shields to protect what people are from a common pot and the fear to become one person just like a number of others.
  2. The second one is what global technologies create : the possibility to connect and join people, to share the same thinking, no matter what their origin is, making up a new virtual tribe.
  3. The third one pushes further the role of global technologies and uncovers the multi-tribalism, or the possibility to be part of many different communities. It is now really easy to join different tribes at once, like the “Pages” on Google+, and share multiple interests with as many specialized virtual communities.

There should not be a problem between globalism and tribalism, and the globalism theory misses the point. As said earlier, the aim of globalism is to take every culture and mix them into a new culture for all mankind to embrace a single thinking. A globalist world is an ideal world where governments and corporations can easily lead, manage and make profits over people who are sharing the same thought, beliefs, ideas and values. In this utopia, discussion would be useless, and it would be necessary to share among people. But this is not possible, not with human beings, because everyday someone come up with a new vision and technology advancement adds new topics to discuss on, therefore developing existing tribe on a different path or creating a new tribe of believers.

The future of mankind resides in a global world where sharing between many different cultures, or tribes, will help improve our ways of life and our perception of the world itself.

What a fantastic post! I am honored to be mentioned. There are many great things you touched upon that all make perfect sense to me. I did particularly enjoy the following:

“In this utopia, discussion would be useless, and it would be necessary to share among people.”

It reminds me of a fantastic cartoon I once saw about the differences between “1984″ and “Brave New World.” I’ll attach it for connivence.

Essentially that statement reminded me the Huxley book. We would all be controlled by pleasure. Our creative and individual thought will be taken away from us.

This is all untrue, this blog is a perfect example of that – the upwards communication.

Either way, glad to be mentioned and what a fantastic post!

    Ye be shipping out,

    -Dan

PS The pirate language is superb.
